A Prom Boutique....Recycle That Dress!

Did you ever pay a bunch of money for a prom dress, wear it once and then have it sit in your closet for an eternity?  Lots of people have! Why?  I don't know either!

A few years ago, I volunteered at a Prom Boutique that someone else had started at our local high school.  What is a Prom Boutique?  The high school has graciously let us store the racks and racks of dresses that have been donated by the local community in a large closet at the school.  We have separated them by size and color.  The school lets us use a classroom and we set up these accordian-like partitions that we use as "dressing rooms".  We stuck a mirror in each dressing room.  We set up a schedule a few months before prom and we post it on the Facebook page we created and we post it on the free online local newspaper in their calendar section.  We have asked local dry cleaners in the area if they would donate dress bags and we've even had a local seamstress offer her services at a discount for those that need an alteration.

The girls LOVE the prom boutique and so do the moms!  We charge $20 a dress and ALL of the proceeds made benefit the after prom party held at the school after prom. We also created a tax deductible receipt to offer to the dress donors so they can write off it off on their taxes. It's a win-win!

Please consider doing this in your community! It's perfect if you have a child in high school or about to enter high school.  Go to the Back to School Night and suggest it to the people there, it really is worth it.  Let's recycle those dresses!
